The Coda Underwater Inspection System or UIS
is the world's only fully integrated high resolution 3D inspection
system, delivering precise and intuitive 3D images in real-time.
Designed to inspect large areas with 100% coverage and 98% probability
of detection, the UIS builds on the extensive knowledge gained
in the development and testing of a Mobile Inspection Package
in collaboration with the Center for Ocean Technology,University
of South Florida, with funding from United States Office of Naval
Research (ONR) and United States Coast Guard (USCG).
At the heart of every UIS is the unique Coda
Echoscope real-time 3D sonar incorporating cutting edge phased
array technology to simultaneously generate over 16,000 beams,
resulting in an instant three dimensional sonar image, where the
position of every data point is accurately known. Producing detailed
images from a single sonar ping, Echoscope
is capable of updating at up to 15 times per second allowing rapid
coverage of large areas, up to 20,000 linear feet per hour. Using
patented 3D mosaicing techniques, large areas can be inspected
very quickly and integrated into an intuitive geo-referenced visualisation
of the whole underwater scene in real-time, in the murkiest of
waters.
To ensure accurate positioning the UIS is integrated
with the Octopus F180 series precision attitude and positioning
system. Providing absolute positioning at accuracies of up to
10cm (4"), with heading better than 0.05°, high accuracy
is key to ensuring that all data is correctly geo-referenced,
enabling real-time mosaicing as well as quick relocation of areas
of interest from previous inspections. As
part of a small boat package, the UIS includes a ruggedized digital
video camera or optional night vision camera to provide a separate
and immediately obvious above water reference. For remotely operated
vehicle (ROV) installations, the latest laser scaling camera provides
an accurate visual cross reference. Depending on the application
and platform, the UIS can be combined with a wide range of additional
sensors and other sonars to create a fully integrated bespoke
package. Centered around the unique and powerful Echoscope 3D
sonar, the integrated UIS solution offers significant advantages
and superior performance over systems using 2D sonar, sector scan
sonar, acoustic lens sonars or underwater video cameras alone.
All
UIS data is routed through a specially designed C3 (command, control
and communications) interface that also handles power distribution,
video digitisation, Ethernet switching, data compression and distribution.
Using secure wireless and secure web-broadcasting, UIS data can
be viewed and analysed from anywhere in the world. Platform independent
and available in a number of standard configurations, the UIS
can be rapidly deployed from a surface boat, remotely operated
vehicle (ROV),autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV/UUV) ormounted
in a fixed position (such as a harbour entrance) to suit the application.
UIS flexibility also means the same components can be used on
other platforms for different applications such as searching a
ship's hull for IEDs or contraband or inspecting the structural
integrity of a dam or levee and can be easily operated in navigationally
restricted environments.
