Octopus F180 Attitude and Positioning System

Precise, reliable motion and positioning data
in a compact plug-and-play package

Demonstrating typical Octopus creative thinking and innovative flair for technological re-engineering, the F180 Attitude and Positioning System is a no-nonsense ‘plug and play’ package.

The Octopus F180 creatively reapplies technology originally developed for the high speed, mechanically extreme world of motor racing. Octopus modifications and enhancements to the light yet robust equipment, designed to meet the punishing demands of the racetrack, have resulted in a simple-to-use, off-the-shelf product that brings accurate positioning and motion data into the most dynamic offshore conditions for precision marine survey applications worldwide.

Delivering heave, roll, pitch, heading and positioning information in real time, it provides the marine user with highly accurate and reliable motion and position data in a cost-effective solution.

Simple installation

To allow easy installation, the outputs of the F180 can be mapped to a remote position – such as a transducer – to give accurate heave, attitude, position and heading at the critical location worldwide.

Octopus F180series - in use around the world

"The F180 is simple to use and faster to set up and calibrate than other systems we have used before. It has been moved around a number of our boats and all the surveyors who have used it found the same thing. Reliability has been great and once set up the unit just keeps outputting accurate data and we do not have to interfere with it.

We have recently chosen the Octopus F180 again over R/V Inland Surveyor equipped with an Octopus F180 and Simrad EM3002 multibeam echosounder in use on pre-dredge and post-dredge QA hydrographic survey for Jacksonville District of US Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Key West Harbor, FL dredging project.the other sensors out there and have decided to purchase a 3rd system for use on the S/V Coastal Surveyor II, R/V Inland Surveyor and S/V Ocean Surveyor. We also plan to use the system on the 180ft boat Emma Macall.

We found that we could mount the F180 anywhere on the vessel - it did not have to be mounted at the centre of boat if this was inaccessible, making the F180 just perfect for putting together a complete system in a short space of time".

"We rented an Octopus F180 from Seafloor Systems for use on a number of projects and were very pleased with the system. With a number of large and high profile contracts lined up for this survey season, we decided to purchase 2 complete systems for use with our Reson multibeam systems and existing Trimble RTK equipment. The F180 is also ideal for some of the more remote locations the company often has The Waka, one of the vessels in the Terra Surveys fleet, is a 34ft long vessel specifically designed for hydrographic survey work and is to be fitted with one of the new Octopus F180 systems for use in Alaskato work in where we depend on the reliability and ease of use of such systems and the small size of the unit and lower power consumption made this the obvious choice for us.

The support we have received from the dedicated technical support folk at CodaOctopus has been awesome and I know the guys in the shop really appreciate the dedication and professionalism they have shown".

"I have compared the Octopus F180 against a number of sensors and the key things I noted were its ease of use, quick set up and short calibration time. When turned on from a cold morning start, the system quickly initialised and gained heading lock, often before the boat left the dock.

We collected data from the Simrad EM3000 multibeam system and ran comparisons on the datasets. We found that what looked like motion artefacts that appeared when using other GPS aided motion sensors had disappeared when using the F180.

A great deal of the work we carry out is surveying up and down rivers, often passing under bridges and overhanging tree canopies. We tested the F180 to gauge its performance in these situations and found that the position, heading and attitude was accurate and smooth even when the systems lost GPS signal whilst passing under bridges, etc.

The technical support team were extremely supportive in assisting me set the system up and were on hand 24 hours a day to answer any questions I had whilst evaluating the system. We look forward to using the F180 on forthcoming projects."

"FJG have been using the Octopus F180 as the primary MRU for 3 seasons, on many different vessels and in many different environments, and are pleased with the results. The system is easy to install and setup and the configuration software is user friendly.

The F180 is very compact and lightweight which makes it a good choice for installations on vessels of opportunity. Everything needed to correct a multibeam survey can be carried to the job in one small box.

The staff at CodaOctopus provide excellent support and every issue has been promptly addressed."

"We've had three good field seasons now with the F180 mounted on the Heron; The state-of-the-art 34ft CSL Heron owned by Canadian Hydrographic Service on loan to the Ocean Mapping Group at UNB, equipped with an Octopus F180 in use with a Simrad EM3000S and Knudsen 320M sidescan and 320BP sub-bottom systemit was our prime sensor for the entire time. It is reliable operationally, providing angular errors comfortably smaller than our alignment uncertainty, even under conditions of high dynamics (100mg+ corners); it is also an excellent teaching tool. The MCOM asynchronous logging utility allows flexible post-mission analysis and re-processing using full bandwidth raw and derived observables. It is used as a core part of our kinematic positioning class laboratories.

The delayed heave solution (iHeave) clearly provides improved long period heave performance. Heron and the F180 are now off to the high Arctic where we will test its high latitude performance."
